Bermondsey Spa
This impressive development has regenerated a part of Southwark centred around the historic St James Church. Taking an opportunity offered by the local Council, Mike set up a team of dedicated professionals for Hyde, and secured exclusive rights to develop this project. Employing prestigious architects Levitt-Bernstein, and convincing local planners and Southwark of the scheme’s potential quality, a development of over 650 homes of all tenures from rent to sale was conceived and approved by the Council.
Densities are high at 930hr/ha, but with a good design, a mix of tenures, a range of facilities, and good accessibility, Bermondsey Spa has become an exemplar development supported by CABE. Part funded by The Housing Corporation it is also an affordable development containing social rent and shared ownership as well as market rent and outright sale.
Bermondsey Spa won a Housing Design Project Award in 2005 and this year won the award for the “Best New Place to Live”, in the 2009/10 London Planning Awards, sponsored by the Mayor of London, RTPI, London First and London Councils.
